Eva Green Biography

| Growing up, Eva was a shy child. In fact, her mother thought her too fragile to ever make it as an actress. Yet she clearly had an exhibitionist side to her and, by the age of 16, she had begun to behave in a far more flamboyant manner. She found her school too normal, too bourgeois, too far removed from her theatrical ambitions, and transferred to another. Inspired, unusually, by the German punk star and TV personality Nina Hagen, she'd dye her hair black, colour her lips and eyelids green or purple, wear gothic crushed velvet and a fancy bra. Sometimes she'd turn up at school dressed as a geisha or a hindu. She was rapidly becoming herself. EG: "As a hindu, as a geisha, or as Nina Hagen. I matched my lips to my eyelids, which looked quite awful when I chose fluorescent green or purple! Because I dyed my hair raven-black, that I dressed in purple velvet with a boa, I scared people! When I look at the pictures from that time of my life, I say to myself that I would never have the courage to go out dressed like that nowadays, but well, it had something creative and theatrical to it." Eva attended French school until the age of 17, she then went to the American school (in Paris) for a year. That's one of the reasons why she's bilingual in French and English. After she graduated, Eva spent three years at the Eva St. Paul drama school in Paris before attending a 10-week polishing course at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She also studied directing for a while at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Her theatre experience includes Didier Long's 'Jalousie En Trois Fax' and Gerard Deshartes' 'Turcarcet'. Her performance in 'Jalousie En Trois Fax' was highly acclaimed and earned her a nomination for Les Molières (France's most important theatre award) for the category Révélation Théâtrale Féminine (Best Female Newcomer). Eva's first film was Bernardo Bertolucci's 'The Dreamers'. In 2004 she starred in the film 'Arsène Lupin' from director Jean-Paul Salomé. Her filmography also includes Ridley Scott's 'Kingdom Of Heaven', in which she worked opposite Liam Neeson, Edward Norton, Jeremy Irons and Orlando Bloom. She turned down a role in Brian De Palma's 'The Black Dahlia' with Josh Hartnett and Scarlett Johansson, because she didn't want to be typecast as a femme fatale after her very naked performance as Isabelle in 'The Dreamers'. The role went to Hilary Swank. In 2006 Eva starred alongside Daniel Craig in 'Casino Royale' playing the role of duplicitous Vesper Lynd. She is the fourth French actress to be a Bond girl. After 'Casino Royale', Eva played Serafina Pekkala, the queen of a witch clan, in 'The Golden Compass', the first installment of a potential trilogy based on Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials." On February 11th 2007, Eva won the Orange BAFTA Rising Star Award, which was voted by the public. In 2008 Eva finished filming Gerald McMorrow's 'Franklyn' which premiered at the London Film Festival and is due for release in January 2009. She can also be seen in the upcoming 2009 movie 'Cracks'. |
Eva Her first name, Eva, is a reference to Eve, the world's first woman, because she was born first, 4 minutes before her twin sister. Latinate form of Eve, and a variant Russian transcription of Yeva. From the Hebrew name Chavvah, which was derived from the Hebrew word chavah "to breathe" or the related word chayah "to live". Gaëlle Possibly a variant of Gwenaëlle, feminine form of Gwenaël. Means "blessed and generous" from Breton gwenn "white, fair, blessed" and hael "generous". Saint Gwenhael was a 6th-century abbot of Brittany. Green Green isn't derived from an English name and is pronounced "grain" or "Greyne", according to Eva herself. It doesn't mean green, which is grön in Swedish. Instead, her last name comes from the Swedish word gren, which means (tree) branch. |

When Eva prepares for roles, she listens to soundtracks or classical music. But "it has to be dramatic, because I'm a crazy person."
Some of Eva's favourite directors are Lars von Trier, David Lynch and David Fincher because they make "dark movies".
Although Eva likes von Trier's films, she doesn't think she's strong enough to work with him at the moment. She would like to work with Tim Burton, Stephen Daldry, Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze. She likes directors who have a world of their own.
Of the older leading French actresses, Eva loves Jeanne Moreau. "She's very ambiguous".
She loves Cate Blanchett. The Australian actress is her idol: EG: "She's very subtle, yet boiling away inside. And I admire the fact that she's very private. You need to have that mystery."
Juliette Binoche, Helena Bonham Carter, Marion Cotillard and Julianne Moore are some of her favorite actresses too. She also likes Isabelle Huppert for her strength and Samantha Morton because "she expresses everything with her big eyes."
Her favourite actor is Edward Norton.
Her favorite artists are Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele.
Her favourite Her cult movie is Ingmar Bergman's 'Cries And Whispers'.
Her favorite designers are John Galliano Jean-Paul Gaultier because he is "a bit gothic, ethnic, folk, and a bit crazy too."
Her favorite color is black.
EG: "It's curious that because of that, of my fair skin and my dark hair, people only saw me in vampire films."
If she weren't an actress, Eva would like to be a cook. She likes to eat and is a good cook. In all the cities she goes to, she pays attention to the good restaurants, where to buy wine and she buys a lot of cookbooks. In her refrigerator, there's always a bottle of red wine and cheese.
Her favorite foods are pistou (a classic French sauce, made by pounding together basil, garlic, oil and sometimes cheese), pasta, foie gras and black truffles.
Eva is very shy and reserved in real life and says she's most shy when she's on a red carpet and on TV. She is however less shy than she used to be and it is one of the reasons she became an actress.
EG: "This was a way of getting rid of all my demons."
Eva smokes.
Eva is myopic.
Eva prefers that people tell her she's a good actress rather than she is beautiful.
Her first Hollywood crush was Leonardo DiCaprio in 'Romeo + Juliet'.
EG: "I am a little embarrassed, but yes, I was a fan."
The talents Eva would like to have: "Eloquence and guts".
Her favorite photographer is Ellen von Unwerth, because, with her, models play a character, always glamorous and sensual, with lots of make-up. It's like a game to pose for her.
She enjoys film noirs, in which women were femmes falates: Lauren Bacall, Marlene Dietrich.
EG: "They had an aura, a mystery."
Ridley Scott told her that she has an old soul and that she is going to be a great actress.
If Eva had a favorite type of man, it would be someone more like Liam Neeson instead of Orlando Bloom.
Eva thinks a perfect man is the one who is able to understand and listen to a woman and the first thing she's attracted to in a man is his voice.
Eva often wears two unique rings. One is a silver skull and the other is a rather Egyptian-looking blue stone that is a fossilized beetle actually. She finds they calm her nerves, especially during interviews.
