She is the daughter of R&B/Gospel singer Alice Tan Ridley. She has attended several New York City area colleges: Borough of Manhattan Community College and The City College of New York and Mercy College.She was a student pursuing a degree in psychology when she was cast in “Precious.” In the film, Gabourey plays a character who is repeatedly raped and has been impregnated twice by her father. The film won numerous awards, including the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Award. Though her acting career is a surprise to her, she is excited to pursue it and says the she has "fallen in love" with her work. She is currently filming "Yelling to the Sky" playing the part of LaTonya Williams.
