| Martin Scorsese mini-bio: Martin Luciano Scorsese is an acclaimed American film director. Scorsese's body of work addresses such themes as Italian-American identity, Catholic concepts of guilt and redemption, machismo, and the violence endemic in American society. He was born in New York City, and has developed a passion for cinema for when he was a little boy. His first feature-lengh film was "Who's that knocking at my door" starring Harvey Keitel. Mean Streets was actually his breakthrough into the world of big directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg. The friendship between De Palma and Scorsese led to one of the greatest collaborations of all time between an actor and a director when Robert De Niro was introduced to Scorsese by his fellow friend. Taxi Driver was a big hit after the success of Mean streets, and it was already known that Martin Scorsese will forever be known as one of the greatest directors. The film won the palme d'or at the 1976 Cannes festival, and was nominated for various oscars. The first of a long series of best directorial nominations began in 1980 for the highly acclaimed black and white picture Raging Bull, followed in 1989 by the last temptation of Christ, then for Goodfellas in 1990, Gangs of New York in 2002, and the aviator in 2005, but none of all these nomination led to an Oscar, although Goodfellas and Raging Bull should clearly have been won. The breakthrough finally came in 2007 with Scorsese packing his first statuette for The Departed. These above were not the only hits of the great director, but lot of splendid works were underrated, mainly talking of The King of Comedy as an example, and the remake of Cape Fear in 1991. Many of us cinephiles do consider Goodfellas as the Greatest gangster movie of all time, even surpassing Coppola's Godfather. Casino followed five years later and everyone was quite sure that Scorsese was the best for this genre. The film became his last collaboration with Robert De Niro. We were introduced to another pairing in the last decade with Leonardo DiCaprio, leading successfully in Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and The Departed.
Shutter Island is set for release in a couple of months now.
