Planet 51 is a galactic-sized animated alien adventure comedy revolving around American astronaut Captain Charles "Chuck" Baker, who lands on Planet 51 thinking he's the first person to st...( read more)ep foot on it. To his surprise, he finds that this planet is inhabited by little green people who are happily living in a white picket fence world reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950s America, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders...like Chuck! With the help of his robot companion "Rover" and his new friend Lem, Chuck must navigate his way through the dazzling, but bewildering, landscape of Planet 51 in order to escape becoming a permanent part of the Planet 51 Alien Invaders Space Museum.

It was a cute movie. Not the best animated movie I have seen this year. Up! still in my opinion has been this best of 09. But it was funny. My nieces and nephew seemed to enjoy it. There was also some jokes in there for us adults. I wouldn't pay theater money to see this, I would recommend waiting for it to come out on DVD. But it was a fun watch, thought I would be bored through out it, but I wasn't. Kids will definitely enjoy this movie. Got some good oldie tunes in it as well. Not a bad watch at all.

With the proliferation of computer-animated fare becoming more incessant lately, it becomes more difficult with each release to pick-out the good ones, from the mediocre ones. Of course, Pixar seems to have a perceived lock on overall quality of animation and storytelling. But wi...( read more)th a curve and standard set so high, it makes it a bit unfair for every other animated movie to be pit against the likes of the Disney mammoth.

So, along comes an independent-film-equivalent to a heftily-budgeted computer animated film: Planet 51. This movie, in now way, pretends to be on the same level as a Pixar show, or even a Dreamworks' Shrek feature (although their choice of making their own characters green and eerily similar to a certain ogre is purely coincidental). The film is filled with enough cleverness and pop culture referencing to make it stand-out as a moderately unique flick.

With voice talent like Dwayne Johnson, Justin Long and Jessica Biel, the movie already feels a little substandard. But its strengths aren't really related to the voice cast. Its primary strength lies in the story itself: a planet of aliens who live similarly like humans on Earth are invaded by an alien unto them: a human astronaut. It's a cute little role reversal that leaves lots of room for some wacky gags and inside jokes and lightly-veiled commentary about the human race for everyone to enjoy.

The fact that these aliens live like humans creates a genius parallel to our world (circa 1950s America) in which we can see ourselves portrayed. Along comes this man from space who poses a threat to the standard way of living. But, in the end, the movie teaches a lesson about the importance of being different and embracing it. And the importance of working alongside somebody who is different for the greater good.

Planet 51 may not be the glossy, cohesive behemoth of a movie that comes with months-worth of buzz or a cast of legendary actors. But it definitely provides a fun alternative to such fare with an original funny bone of its own.

Much to my surprise, this is the best movie I saw all day. I very literally had no expectations, at all. Didn't think it'd be good, didn't think it be bad, just plain didn't think about it. The movie begins with two 50s kids at "Lovers Lane" when they are attacked by aliens. It t...( read more)urns out that the kids are aliens (to us) and the "Humaniacs" are the aliens. With some quick and fun 50s invasion movie homages, we discover it's a movie that is playing at their local theater. With that, lots of homages and spoofing of such happens, with some great, snappy dialogue, although not all the jokes worked all that well. The animation, while not amazing, was very solid, vibrant, and fun. The impressive cast, Dwayne Johnson, Justin Long, Jessica Biel, John Cleese, and Gary Oldman all voice prominent characters, and all do very well. The movie moves at a quick, breezy pace and doesn't overstay it's welcome. The story is very typical of such things, but also plays with it a bit, which helps it seem fresh. Also, any movie that makes several highly amusing Star Wars jokes, that are all incorporated into the dialogue can't be all that bad.

This movie may be more enjoyable for adults who remember B-level alien invader movies from the 50s or 60s, in the same vein as I imagine Monsters vs. Aliens was. Lots of movie references, a bit of surprising adult humor, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in another kiddie movie, a Wall-...( read more)E like robot, and an alien world with a recognizable American 1950's culture make up this picture. I did appreciate that Lem voiced by Long worked in a museum planetarium and that his knowledge of the vastness of the universe was expanded by the end.

I'm really giving this the benifit of the doubt and looking at the potential it has cause it really kind of sucked! Now... where to start? I'll start with the visuals cause that was the first thing I noticed. The potential is there; I mean, the trees at the start looked realistic...( read more)- like you could touch them! Likewise the mise-en-scene of a 50s style and culture is brilliant; however then you have to ask why is there culture mirroring ours SO closely? Either way, it none-the-less is really, REALLY sharp! Then the music, which also follows ours but is redone by sub-par artists, comes on and because its done by sub-par artists, falls sub-par. However, the score is really good. Then comes the acting and the writing which is debatable. Justin Long is perfect for this role, and he does the part really well! Jessica Biel is too sexy and sounds wrong as the girl next door (who happens to like really cute regardless of the fact she's an alien). Dwayne Johnson (who I'm sorry shouldn't play a white guy) is way too stoic for his own good, and is way, WAY too full of himself to be likable or believable. And I'm not too sure why John Cleese is there, let alone playing a part so stereotyped its annoying! The writing. Could have been brilliant, it could have been really great if it had gone that extra step towards parody or satire. It sort of does; makes refrence to at least a dozen films in both the sci-fi and other genres but at times the refrence is either a clear rip off or not clear enough! Likewise the writing bridges on either potty humour and pradictablity or the fringes of brilliance. Which becomes the theme of the movie brilliance that is left behind for vulger and low culture. Which is really sad. And the WALL-E robot isn't nearly as cute!

Planet 51. Is the name based on the mysterious Area 51? It's alieny. Would make sense. Nope. Planet 1-50 have been trademarked. That's it. And it's only the beginning to Planet 51's unoriginality. You have a good idea like this, then take a squat on it? Everything is references. ...( read more)A reference to this movie, a reference to that movie. People, space probes, rovers, area's. How about a reference to an original movie. During the previews it said "from the creators of Shrek." Really? It has to be good then. Then it continued to say "and Ice Age and Ice Age 2." Nope. No good.

The name you hear tagged to this movie is Dwayne Johnson. Well, his character starts out impeding the movie. Lame. Justin Long is the only actor I'd say did a good job, the rest had little to work with, so saying they did a bad job would be unfair to them. I'm a big fan of Long, and it's easy to recognize his voice. He's done at least two movies a year since his third year of acting, and in 2009 is creditied with TEN MOVIES!!! I'm not complaining. The guy's funny. Reference Accepted (2006) if you have any doubts.

There are so many writers and executives, and even directors, that Planet 51 didn't stand a chance from the get-go.

The children in the theater were entertained, but I couldn't get into it, and my wife thought it was lame as well. And we're cartoon lovers. AT THE MOST I'd say rent it for the kids. But don't subject yourself to Planet 51.

Fim.
