The Shawshank Redemption is the ultimate feel good film. Everything from the performances to the music is just perfect. It's not particularly original, it's stolen ideas from nearly every prison break film there is, but it doesn't matter, The Shawshank Redemption is beautiful and...( read more) never gets boring. Brilliant!

In this review I'm not going to give a plot synopsis of this film because I'm sure everybody else who has commented on it has. However, I will express the positive effect it can have on the viewer if they let it.

The acting is uncommonly magnificent. Morgan Freeman delivers the ...( read more)greatest performance of his brilliant career as the seasoned life-serving prisoner Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding, Tim Robbins holds his own against Freeman as Andy, the central character, James Whitmore's portrayal of the institutionalized Brooks provides the backbone of the story, Bob Gunton is wonderful as the corrupt Warden Norton, and Clancy Brown's commanding performance as Captain Hadley, the sadistic head prison guard, almost makes him steal the show from Freeman.

Frank Darabont's restrained direction of the delicate story is critical for the film to not become sentimental or clichéd, and his beautiful adaptation of the Stephen King story on which the movie is based is a real breath of fresh air. On account of Darabont, the film shows that special effects are not needed to tell a great story in film. As a teenager, I love special effects movies as much as the next person, but they get boring after a while. Plus many people forget that there was a time in cinema when the blockbuster didn't exist, when they made movies that just told great stories and gave the audience a chance to be uplifted by those stories without the creators having to resort to special effects. I applaud you for having the guts to make a non-commercial film that reminds people of that in this day and age, Mr. Darabont.

    SPOILER ALERT!

As with all truly great films, 'The Shawshank Redemption' is full of scenes that have become entrenched in the public's collective consciousness. There's the scene where Andy plays the opera record over the loudspeaker for all the inmates in the prison, Captain Hadley bashing "Fat @$$" to death for crying during his first night in prison (a very powerful scene), Red giving his "Rehabilitated?" speech to the board of parole officials, the Warden getting his final judgement, and of course, Andy crawling to freedom through what Red in his narration calls "500 yards of s**t-smelling foulness I can't even imagine,", the scene which for me is perhaps the greatest movie scene of the '90s.

    END OF SPOILERS!

I thoroughly recommend this cinematic masterpiece, which has earned its place in my humble top ten films of all time list, to anybody. Whatever gender, age, religion, nationality etc. you are and whatever language you speak, I guarantee it will change your life, or perhaps even save it. Movies like 'The Shawshank Redemption' only come along once every decade, if that. Unforgettable.

    Review:
The Shawshank Redemption is one of most beautifull and touching movies i ve ever seen in my life.I got the movie as a present of my French teacher and she said that i will enjoy the movie and she was right. When i first watched The Shawshank Redemption i just wanted to cry because the story touched me a lot and i enjoyed this amazing movie every second.I doubt that will make such a beautifull and inspiring movie as The Shawshank because this movie has a unique magic.

Tim Robbins delivers an amazing and brilliant perfomance as Andy Dufrense, who is accused to murder his wife and his lover.Andy is sentenced to 20 years in the Shawshank prision where he deals with the crooks, murderes and even the prision guards until he gets friendly to Red.What i enjoyed about Tim Robbins is the fact that makes Andy such a interesing person and gives great deepness in someone who is in prison but he never gives up hope and who wants to achieve his own dreams.Robbins s perfomance is worth of an Academy Award but he gets rewarded with his another great perfomance in Mystic River.Morgan Freeman is one of the best actors of all time and he shows here why as Red,an convicted who becomes Andy s best friend.Morgan s perfomance is absolutely great because Red is a guy who lived all of his life in prision that considered his house untill he meets Andy,he gets a new meaning in his own life,The chemistry between Robbins and Freeman is one of the best things of the movie because they are two guys who are trying a new meaning in the their life. The other actors were fantastic including Clancy Brown and Bob Gunton.

Frank Darabont directs this movie with such a brilliance and realism that made this movie a stunning masterpiece. His direction captured the story and the characters in a way that is overwellming.I m really curious about A Green Mile but this Darabont s best movie yet.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of the greatest movies of all time and personally one of my all time faves. This movie is so beautifull and inspiring that really touched in my heart and is inspired me to never give up in my dreams.Stunning mastepierce.

This is a movie set in a prison and it's unlike any movie you've ever seen. We've seen a lot of this stuff, but this is different from most prison films. a lot of prison films have a lot to do with escaping. This is highly different, and it may touch on prison breaks, but most of...( read more) the time you're focused on the fantastic storyline and characters.

This is genuinely an epic story. It's about Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a banker who is sent to Shawshank Prison for killing his wife and a golf pro she was having sex with. At first, life was hard there. He would be attacked by Bull Queers led by the violent Bogs (Mark Rolston) and he didn't have many friends. However, he soon befriends Red (Morgan Freeman), a man that could get things for you. He also becomes a favourite to guards and the Warden (Bob Gunton) of the prison, as he helps them with financial matters. I loved this film because as the film goes on, we see Andy's whole time in prison. The characters are all interesting. I loved the ending. I usually only cry in sad and tragic films, but I cried at the ending of this not because it was sad, but because it was so fucking beautiful! It's definitely one of the best endings I have ever seen. It's got that friendship-ish feeling about it, and it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.

The acting was terrific. We have a great cast here. Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman and Bob Gunton - they're all fantastic! If I had to pick the best actor here, it would be Tim Robbins or Morgan Freeman. I can't choose which one is better. They're both so good. They work really well together. i thought they were cast really well for their characters.

The themes here are great. Hope is one of them, and it has a lot to do with the second half of the film. The other themes about prison were terrific as well. There's a lot about these themes that make the film more epic.

This film is in my top 5 of most epic movies ever made. It's sweet, funny, EPIC and sinister. We get some great acting, a spectacular story and a beautiful ending that will make you cry. One of the best films ever made!

It's the no-bull performances that hold back the flood of banalities. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

If the film is perhaps a little slow in its middle passages, maybe that is part of the idea, too, to give us a sense of the leaden passage of time, before the glory of the final redemption. full review

this is the film that indeed dearest to my heart. at first i ignored this one when i walk through a video store thinking nothing about it until i learned about their Oscar nominations. they had 7 Oscar nominations but went home nothing. so i give it a try, i rented it without single knowledge of what kind of movie this was (i was even curious about the title though) and the rest is history to me. i had vcd of this film (i don't have dvd coz i can't find it) and i never let anyone to borrow it because its a treasure to me and i can't find it anywhere in our country. this movie should stay forever and ever, amen!

Not even walls can hold hope confined.

Shawshank is a tale of freedom, friendship and the bond of overcoming struggle in the face of desperation.

    A true masterpiece.
