It doesn't make sense, visually, but you still understand what the story is about.

This modern version of Shakespeare?s classic tale of love is so very nearly perfect. It just has one problem, and it?s quite a big one. Leonardo Dicappuccino. He's awful!

This reminds me of freshman year in college - romance, drama, 18-year-old angst. And also it came out during my freshman year in college.

I turely hate this version of the movie. The spend the whole movie yelling the lines at it each it's gross and totally kills the atmosphere.

Quirky and kind of shifts too fast from one shot to the next, but honestly, I loved it. I like the contemporary feel to it and the whole gang-mafia idea. Mercutio was over-the-top, just like I imagined him. Well done Baz Lurhmann!
Critic Reviews
Luhrmann and his two bright angels have shaken up a 400-year-old play without losing its touching, poetic innocence. full review
I have never seen anything remotely approaching the mess that the new punk version of Romeo & Juliet makes of Shakespeare's tragedy. full review
It would be destined for the trash heap of Shakespeare adaptations, if not for its female lead, and its heart, 17-year-old Claire Danes. full review

May 26, 2008to lkehisal and to whoever else decided that this movie was inappropriate:
I'm 14. I never thought that i would be able to get through a shakespearean movie, but this opened doors for me. i know shakespeare is amazing, but some of his work is very, sadly, inacsesable to a younger generation. this version makes that generation able to understand the magic of shakepeare. you are fully welcome to have your own opinion but dont make it so that others are turned off of a chance to discover the most amazing playwright this world has or will ever see. -
May 26, 2008This movie is BEYOND amazing. Claire Danes is brilliant and Leonardo Dicaprio is too! I just love it SO much. My favourite scene is the scene in the swimming pool, with the proposal and you know, declaration of undying LOVE that sort of thing. But anyway, this scene makes me ACHE! it makes me wish I was in love, makes me long for it......it was soo good!

January 11, 2008Superb. A modern, enthralling, exciting, romantic, emotional, action-packed version that does justice to the orignal play.
Excellent soundtrack, perfect script as it's true to the original language and though modern, keeps aspects of the original play threaded into the settings, situations and props.

January 5, 2008William Shakespeare is rolling in his grave. This has got to be the most awful versions of one of the best plays in history. It was ghetto, street, inappriate, ridiculous, and insulting. All involved in making this disgrace should be sent to court and sued for taking peoples' time and money unfairly.
