This Is England - Unrated A brilliantly filmed look at skinhead culture and the English midlands in the early 1980's. Shane Meadows has topped the fantastic Dead Man's Shoes with this, something I didn't think possible. Gritty and intense, it gives us a glimpse of what it was like growing up in the era of Thatcher and the Falklands War.

Go and see it.

Vengeance Is Mine - Unrated A really good Japanese serial killer film from 1979. The director presents the protaganist in quite a neutral light and lets us see the history of the killer, Iwoa Enokizu (played brilliantly by Ken Ogata) and by the end of the film you almost feel some sympathy for him.

Highly recommended. There is a really nice edition on R2 from Eureka! (the version I have) or there is a version due out imminently from Criterion for the US fans which I'm sure will be equally good if past form is anything to go by.

A Bittersweet Life (Dalkomhan insaeng) - Unrated I really enjoyed this when I sat down with it last night. I picked it up as a blind buy just on the strength of the writing on the back of the sleeve and because I watch quite a bit of Korean cinema. I don't think I have any other Korean gangster films other than Infernal Affairs so I ecided to give it a whirl. Sometimes going into a film with zero expectations is the best way to see them and this has some really good action scenes and some intrestesting character developtment. The main character is very interesting, he remains calm as he goes about his work of dispatching those that have crossed him in the most serene way all the way up until the bitter end. It was refreshing to see a lot of the fighting done with knives and hand to hand combat rather than people using guns from the get go. I don't suppose many US gangster films would do that but it's just a reflection of different cultures I suppose.

Watch this if you liked Oldboy and are looking for something similar in style but not narratively. No big twist endings, just lots of pools of blood and gore which is the way I like it.

I'll do a proper review soon, I want to watch it again first though I think.

Dancer in the Dark - R I thought this was a very interesting take on the musical genre and really enjoyed it. Bjork is brilliant in this and somebody really needs to get her to do more acting. Why she didn't win an Oscar for this I don't know. The film is shocking and heartbreaking and probably in my top 10 movies of all time. March 24, 2007

The Running Man - R The is my favourite Arnie movie after the Terminator films. It has so many cheesy one-liners in it and some great action scenes. Something of a premonition about the future of television perhaps. March 13, 2007
