Ging chaat goo si (Police Story) (Jackie Chan's Police Force) (1985,  R)
Ging chaat goo si (Police Story) (Jackie Chan's Police Force)
THE GREATEST ACTION MOVIE EVER MADE!!

When I first came on Flixster, they didn't have this movie in its database. WTF???

Anywayz, about time!! This is Jackie's best action movie ever, and he did it all as well - acting, screenplay, action direction and director. Oh, of course - the stunts as well. :-)

Its a brillant piece of work - the definitive JACKIE movie - lots of action, a good plot, from which Jackie took fromm one if his dismal failures in the US, and made the idea into something legendary. Most of the action scenes from this movie has been copied time and time again into many other movies - a good example being the Shantytown stakeout car chase - which was copied into the climatic car chase in Bad Boys 2.

Jackie is one of Hong Kong's finest, trying his very best to take down a drug dealer. But things go crazy when he has to babysit the beautiful witness to th chagrin of his girlfriend, the bad guys are out looking for him, and to top it off, he is framed for murdering another officer. Lots of emotion and energy from this film - the final fight scene in the mall SPECTACULAR.

interesting facts - this movie was nicknamed GLASS STORY by the stuntmen - and if you watch it, you'll see why. And apparently so many people, including the main man himself, got injured and were rushed to hospital. And after this movie, no insurance company will work with Jackie - so pretty much he foots the medical bills and everything himself.

And despite all that - this is one of the best movies ever made.

A "watch this before you die" movie.

The Godfather (1972,  R)
The Godfather
Fear him, despise him, respect him - love movie!

Marlon Brando is the Godfather, the wisest, most loved and repsect Don of the times, his power and authority from New York to Sicily. We enter the world of his family, his trials and tribulations, how lifes are intertwined under his shroud, and how they are destroyed, and how others grow. Though despite being one of the most feared men that ever lived, The Don knows he is not immortal, and an attempt on his life throws his "cosca" in a bloody war in which there are many casualties.... and knowing that to save his Family, he must stop the war through his power and honor.... but in his mind he is preparing his youngest son, the exiled and indepedant Michael Corleone, to take his place and reignite the power of the Corleone family and bring justice to those who crosses the Godfather and his Family.

Flawless......... movie. I would criticise it for not being a 5 hour epic which followed the book, but the Godfather 2 pretty much told the rest of the story, and that was near flawless as well.

Marlon Brando obivously made the movie, but in my mind, Al Pacino and James Caan were the big guns. These two always light up the screen, Pacino, with his quiet intensity and presence, in opposite to the raging war monger James Caan, the Underboss of the Family.

So many contrasts, so many shades of grey, so many stories, lives and so much death... you would feel if you have entered the 1940's to 50's period as well. Its engaging in the sense that even though this is a work of fiction, it shows us that these people do exist and this is what happens. Its tale of reality in the underworld, literally. An Underworld, a world which is not our own, and admit it, we are all curious to explore.

One of the best movies ever made.

The Godfather, Part II (1974,  R)
The Godfather, Part II
Certainly the only movie to match or even better its predecessor.

The Godfather 2 carries on after the Five Families War, and the Corleones are now unchallengeable and control all the gmabling in the US, their home base in Nevada. Michael Corleone is trying to legitimise his family and power, but the dark underworld begins to pull him back in, and soon he is forced to unleash the the full force of his power and tactical genius inherited from his famous father. But the bloody war in the underworld is only half the problem, as Michael struggles to also save his family from destruction, and makes the most damaging choices of his life that will haunt him forever.

Through the movie, we flash back to the early 1900's, we see Vito Andolini arrive in the US and become the legendary Vito Corleone, the GODFATHER, and his rise to power and quest for revenge against the Don responsible for his family's death. Struggling in the streets as a child and growing up with his best friend Genco Abandando, young Vito meets and befriends the young Clemenza and Tessio and all together, they form a friendship and Family that will become the most powerful Family in the United States.

Anyways... .what can I say?? Pure brilliance. I managed to get the Coppola Restoration box set, and the experience is...... unimaginably perfect. I cannot stress how GOOD this new box set is compared to the predecessors. It is without a doubt, the DVD collection of all time.

Certainly the movies to watch before you die.

Collateral (2004,  R)
Collateral
One of the best thrillers of my time!! Personal Fav. - Tom Cruise's best movie for me.
Cruise plays a charismatic, or sadistic (up to you) hitman named Vincent, which hires cab driver Max (Foxx) to unknowingly drive him around LA while he completes his tasks. But when things go wrong after the first victim, Max is forced by Vincent to drive for him, thus bringing Max into a dangerous game, to which if Max doesn't play by th Vincents' rules, people start dying.
Mark Ruffalo is a detective working on busting up a drug ring, but finds that his informer has disappered 'literally' out the window. As more bodies begin to appear with the same connection to his case, Ruffalo tries to keep up with Max and Vincent before more people are killed.
Michael Mann has done it again - best movie for me since 2003. Nothin else matchs up to the intensity and thrilling twists and turns of this flick. Cruise has some of the best lines and Foxx is brilliant playing a man with his emotions and thoughts being terrorised by the opposite Cruise - cold, emotionless and sociopathic.
BRAVO!!!!

Scarface (1983,  R)
Scarface
Only one world - and only One Scarface.

Sighs - whatcan I say? Something I can watch a million times over and learn something new. Lots of things in the movie which can make you sit back and say - we would all like to be like Tony Montana (albeit not killers and dealers) but take life by the balls and make your mark on the world any which we can.

Antonio Montana arrives from Cuba with nothing but his balls. And as you will watch, he will prove to the world that he has got the biggest balls there is. Capitalising on any oppurtunity to get a slice of the American Dream, Tony takes life head on with such a speed and ferocity which ultimatley causes his undoing.

So many lines as well... :-)

"You F--- with me, your f------ with the best!! "

The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Well again we have the year of the sequels - Indy, X files, Hellboy, the Mummy3. And Prequel (I saw the trailer for the Clone Wars)

And again we have the year of the Hype. Though this year there has been too much talk and hot air for my tastes, and it stinks and bad after taste is usually the end result. Indiana Jones... kaput. IPhone... meh. The Dark Knight?? Well, lets see what i have to say in my review.

Now, I don't hand out 5 stars like some typical know-nothing movie goer... it takes a lot to impress me. When I first heared that Heath Ledger was gonna play The Joker a couple years back, I was kinda skeptical. I mean, Im a fan of Heath, I saw him rise in fame and the movies from his beginning... and I thought, naaah, he certainly couldnt pull it off to my expectations. Jack Nicholson topped a few bad guy lists back since 1991, it was usually a toss up between him and Big Arnie (Terminator) and maybe Tony Montana. Everyone had varied views. And when it comes to bad guys, Im probably one of the most critical. I love bad guys, bad ass and a disappointing bad guy can ruin the entire film.

But Im glad to say that I was wrong. Though there are a few similarities to Ole Jack's Joker, it was a different Joker on the screen which stole the show. And pretty much I loved every second of it. Its a great shame Heath died, this would have solidified his reputation as one of the best actors for the rest of his career. Noone else could have pulled the Joker off with such conviction it scared a few movie goers. But then again, I kinda suspect that Heath died due to overdosing on meds, because seriously, a role like that could drive anyone insane. But whats done is done and gone... and this would be his greatest legacy. (Aside from his little girl)

Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine... the A-list cast of the year. Im sure you are all familiar with all of them except Aaron Eckhart, who completed the trio. He is the anti-Batman and Joker character both as Harvey Dent and Two-Face... he brought a balance to the movie and a great character to the screen... a hero who fell. A great concept.

Well anyways, the movie itself. Now, I have a concept about certain movies like this. I call them "Dangerous" movies... for the obvious reason. I LOVE DANGEROUS MOVIES. This is the most dangerous movie of the year. The decade?? The original Batman was voted the movie of the 1980's. The Dark Knight the movie of the 2000's?? Yeah why not? It certainly gets my vote for the most dangerous movie of the 2000's. Some would say Rambo instead, but it takes more than just graphic violence and body bits to make a dangerous movie, it takes great acting, directing, no expectation and all surprise and shock beyond normality. The Dark Knight is all that and then some - thanks to Chris Nolan and Heath. Then throw in a little bit of humor and some great cinematics (and with tanker loads of dynamite and gasoline XD)... and some good classic moments which define the action/thriller genre (I loved it when the Joker pulls out the rocket launcher to teach some smart assed cops that you never underestimate the Clown Prince of Crime - he will ALWAYS have a bigger gun)

It was a dark flick... but then again, its Batman, so don't complain. It was long... but hey, if the massess can sit for 3 hours plus for Lord of the Rings (3 times) and the Harry Potter series (around 7 times for the whole series) then why should people complain? Id rather sit for three hours and watch a modern masterpiece of comic book legends I grew up with rather than a series of books of a boy wizard I have no love for.... and I won't criticise LOTR, but I wouldn't even need to flip the coin. It would be Batman every single time. So no, the usual grip that people have about the length... no it wasnt a problem for me.

Anyways... this movie has set many levels and standards, and it would be interesting to see how future movies would compare, as far as the artistry is concerned. Cause this is a definite top 10 movie for any serious movie buff.

As Im typing this, The Dark Knight in it's opening week made 158Mil in the US. and its number 225 in the top 250 of all time box office list WORLDWIDE. Let see how its goes for the next month eh? ^___^

Anyways... there is only one movie this year in my eyes which can hope to win the battle of the sequels now (I saw the trailer at the Dark Knight). Come November 27th, Bond is planning to take down The Dark Knight. 007 for the new millenium is a bad ass, so don't think its gonna take this lying down. For those of you who think Bond couldn't possibly beat the Dark Knight this year... well the numbers show that 007 wins out. And after the mega success of Casino Royale, and watching the trailer of Quantum of Solace, the pairing of Rocky vs Muhammed Ali is nothing compared to this showdown. And I love a great fight.

And right now, the Mummy 3 and Hellboy 2 two are arm wrestling over the action/adventure of the year title. Its a great time for movies people.

Casino Royale (2006,  PG-13)
Casino Royale
A superb Bond - goes back to the way its supposed to be. It would help if people read Ian Fleming's books to see what Bond is really like, and Daniel Craig is 007 down to detail, except for the blond hair. :-) - but forget the hair and watch him whoop ass in a raw action movie which is very rare in Hollywood these days. No gadgets, no corney lines, no stupidity.

Bond is shown here as a raw recruit in MI:6, though no less intelligent and dnagerous, Craig's character shows a cold as ice Bond struggling to become the spy and assassin required of him by M, but lacking the finesse and his inability to control his flaring temper and pride, which nearly drives M to regret her decision on granting him the 00 status and Bond driving himself to the edge of blowing his mission. Paired with Eva Green, a total opposite to his character, Bond begins to melt his diamond hard exterior, but the mission takes more twists than turns and it suddenly Bond realises that he still has much to learn in the ways of an MI:6 agent and is taught a valuable lesson when tragedy strikes and almost brings him to breaking point. And this is how 007 came to be.
The DVD is pretty good - Though it hasnt got much in way of special features, it does warrant two discs - one for the few features it does have, Nice docos on the new Bond, a making of and a neat one on ther Bond chicks, plus the music video by Chris Cornell - great song!

A different Bond movie for the new generation, and its the idea of doing things differently in a tried and true formula which has lasted over 40 years, has reignited the Bond franchise and restored my faith in 007 movies.

This movie was the highest grossing 007 movie to date, earning nearly 600 million worlwide.

Die Hard With a Vengeance (Die Hard 3) (1995,  R)
Die Hard With a Vengeance (Die Hard 3)
Willis, Jackson, Irons - Classic!! Personal Fav. THE GRANDADDY of action movies. NO EQUAL
Willis is McClane, the tough, rude, crude NY cop being brought out of suspension due to the whim of psychotic bomber who wants McClane to play his games,(Jeremy Irons) one of the best baddies to hit the screen. Samuel L Jackson is a local shop owner, with prejudices against caucasins, who is reluctantly forced to join McClane while they try to keep up with Iron's schemes, which nearly bring New York City to it's knees. But is it all an act of a mad bomber or is there another motive?
The action is everything: guns, fists, car chases, explosions, water, boat, helicopters and the famous taxi scene in Central Park. And the biggest weapon of all: insults.
Willis and Jackson never have a boring moment as these two are always on each others fraying nerves, with strong performances and some great lines. Irons is perfect as the charismatic and inteliigent bad guy .
All around - those who like action movies - this is one you should see before you die. More than equals its two predecessors and many action movies since.

Freddy Four Fingers is a man with four fingers and a jewel thief.

Face/Off (1997,  R)
Face/Off
Yes I'm recommending this AGAIN.

When John Woo was finally let off the Hollywood chains which stifled his start in Hollywood, the result was a masterpiece which defined the new sky high limits of adrenaline fueled action that will stand the test of time and is an instant classic.

Aside from the operatic display of guns and violence, Travolta and Cage, two of Woo's favourite actors, combine to great the most dangerous and deadliest enemies to grace the screen, the literal live wire tension and crackling energy between the two is beyond good and evil, it's another universe in itself. A flawed, broken FBI agent out for revenge, hunting down his worst enemy and nightmare, a psychotic criminal genius without remorse or a conscience, that it nearly drives him insane.... and nearly does when switches identities with his mortal enemy for an undercover mission... only to discover the trap has reversed and his now the hunted.Losing everything but his hatred, he decides to play the game his way.... and becomes the person he hates.

The script is perfect, the music score is perfect, there is no limit in this movie to what is possible or not, it happens and it doesn't just happen.... it annihilates everything and anything. There is no flaw that I can see at all. It is without a doubt, the perfect action movie, and its hard to beat.

Just watch it yourself and see why.
